Apex Volunteers

Apex Australia is a vibrant and energetic volunteer service organisation focused on harnessing the ideas, ideals and intelligence of primarily younger Australians.  Although some of our clubs are open to people of all ages, most welcome members aged from 18 to 45. We are an authentic Australian icon - established in 1931 and going strong. We have helped more than 200,000 younger Australians make a difference to their community, learn valued skills and make great friends. The Apex story is one of fun, fellowship and friendship. We offer you the opportunity to give others a fair go, practical help and positive role models to reach their own potential. Its Apex, Its Australian!

Apex volunteers can be located from Alice Springs to Wodonga, from Brisbane to Goondiwindi. They are lawyers, carpenters, school teachers, council workers, students and farmers. There is no typical Apexian - gender, geography and gainful employment are no guide as to why people joined or how they get involved. We have a policeman who project manages a statewide fashion show and a publican who runs a multi-layered national organisation.

You can be an Apex member right now. Just use the contact link on this website and take the first step. Many of yesterday's new Apexians, often having joined soon after school, college or university, are today's medical researchers, managers, elected representatives and community leaders. Apex has made a difference to their lives and it can do the same for you.  Your local Club will offer you plenty of opportunities to help other Australians, make new friends, and gain skills in public speaking, leadership and communication.

Our National Board

Meet our National Board! We are lucky to have a group of dedicated professionals who freely donate their time, energy and professional expertise to Apex. The Directors are responsible to the Members for the performance of the organisation in both the short and longer term and seek to balance these sometimes competing objectives in the best interest of the organisation as a whole. The board’s focus is to ensure the organisation is properly managed and that it remains committed to the Apex Ideals.

Gavin Mingay

National President

I have been a member of the Apex Club of Toowoomba for almost nine years. During those years I have fulfilled almost all roles on the Board of our club, including Service Director, Secretary, Treasurer and President, plus a few other minor roles. For almost two years, I was the Regional Communicator for Region 3 and I have recently become the Regional Communicator for Region 4. These roles have been challenging due to limited resources, distance and communication difficulties, but I feel progress is being achieved. My aim is to see more inter-club assistance and interaction, as there are many smaller clubs around Australia that need assistance. It would be wonderful to see the stronger clubs stepping up to assist the smaller clubs, as I believe this would contribute to the growth of Apex. I earn my living as a pharmacist by day and am a massive sports enthusiast. Through both of these, I am able to contribute to my community in many ways, but I would relish the chance to contribute to the building of Apex Australia into an even more amazing organisation. I am very grateful for all that Apex has given me over the years and I would love to assist others in gaining the same benefits.

April Lancaster-Smith

National Secretary & National Vice-President

A proud member of the South Toowoomba Apex Club since 2009, April has served in every club executive role and has been actively involved in Apex leadership at both regional and national levels. She served as Regional Communicator for Region 3 for one year before being elected to the National Board in 2023, where she is now serving her third consecutive year as a Director. A highlight of her Apex career was participating in the 2023 Overseas Work Party in the Philippines, an experience that strengthened her commitment to service, international fellowship, and the core values of Apex. Professionally, April works as a Marketing Coordinator in Toowoomba within the grain storage and bulk handling sector, supporting Australian manufacturing and regional industries. Her expertise in communications and marketing has enabled her to contribute significantly to Apex's storytelling, member engagement, and national communications initiatives. When she’s not immersed in work or Apex, April can be found on the cricket pitch, both indoors and outdoors, and is a passionate advocate for women’s cricket in Toowoomba. Her love of sport, community, and connection continues to shape her leadership style and contribution to Apex Australia.

Liam Gilmour

National Treasurer

I have been a member of the Cobram-Barooga Apex Club since the start of 2019 after being introduced to them by my father Andrew Gilmour who is a Life Member of Cobram-Barooga. I was really excited to get involved to meet new people in my community and to be a part of the ongoing legacy that is Apex. In my time there I have been Club President and two years as Club Secretary, also holding various other roles. Through my career as an Apexian I have been exposed to many different local projects and have been a part of the management team for many of our large-scale events and I have grown exponentially as a person. One of my proudest moments in Apex was to be selected to be a part of our club’s International 3-Way Link with Roundtable Clubs in Pretoria, South Africa and Neath, Wales where I got to go to Pretoria and experience their culture, as well as be a part of their International AGM. It challenged me to what the possibilities could be at a national level for Apex Australia. In my professional life I have had multiple careers as an Audio-Visual Technician and as a Qualified Electrician running my own business, but I am currently studying an Electrical Engineering degree at Deakin University in Geelong. I travel around a bit these days so I am hoping to meet a few new Apex faces in my time on the Board. Joining on the National Board I hope to be able to bring my wealth of knowledge and hopefully a point of call for any way I can help to make your club a raging success in both your community and for you on a personal level as Apex is all about being with your mates and having a good time, while also helping the community. If you’re thinking of joining a club or know of someone who would be, to borrow a line from our President, the time is now!

Tara Spotswood

Immediate Past National President

I joined Apex in 2014 after a difficult time in my life, including the loss of my event planning business during the Bundaberg floods of 2013. Encouraged by an employee whose father was a dedicated Apex life member, I attended a meeting—and the rest is history. Apex has pushed me out of my comfort zone, encouraged personal and professional growth, and opened opportunities I never imagined. It has taught me that true leadership is hands-on—staying connected with clubs, supporting one another, and carrying forward the traditions of service, fellowship, and citizenship. Outside of Apex, I am the Operations Manager of a regional hotel and a proud mum of two young adults. For us, Apex is a family journey—my children have grown up on road trips, fundraisers, and work parties, and they carry the same community spirit. This is my sixth year on the National Board, having served as Regional Communicator Coordinator, Treasurer, Vice President, and now National President. My journey hasn’t been without challenges—I left school in Year 10 and was often told my dyslexia would hold me back. Yet Apex gave me the confidence to grow, to lead, and to see potential not only in myself but in others. That remains one of Apex’s greatest gifts.

Amy Patterson-Kane

Regional Communicator Coordinator

My Apex journey started in 2019 when I moved from Darwin, NT to Chinchilla, QLD. I googled service clubs in Chinchilla and found Apex and was hooked from my first meeting with the Apex Club of Chinchilla. Since them I have been a member of 3 different clubs having moved around because of work. I have been a member of the Chinchilla, South Toowoomba and Chartering member of the Apex Club of Capricorn West in Rockhampton. I have now completed a full circle and am back in the Apex Club of Chinchilla. During my time in Apex, I have held all of the executive roles and helped grow Chinchilla’s Social Media presence. I have also recently serviced 2 years as the Regional Communicator for Region 3 (South West QLD). I have travelled a lot with Apex to other club events, national conventions, an overseas convention in the Philippines and to the South Island of New Zealand for an exchange program with Roundtable. Apex has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally through programs like the Rising Stars and the amazing people I have met. I will all ways be gratefully for this. In my professional life I work in a warehouse at a coal fired power station and I am also the health and safety representative for my team. I started there as an adult trainee and now have a full-time position and loving it. In my person life I enjoy travelling (to a lot of Apex events), painting and craft and reading fantasy books. I have been volunteering in some way or another since I was 10 when I would do Kiosk duty at club run a local swimming pool in Gladstone, QLD. You could say that giving back and helping people is a large part of who I am.

Kacey Pearce

Membership Director

I have been a member of Apex Club of Gympie in Queensland since 2021. I am a passionate community member, dedicated to building a strong club and community through service, leadership & collaboration. In my time with the club, I have been Club President and Treasurer, as well as serving as Director of the Gympie Music Muster, our clubs flagship project, contributing to one of the region’s most significant community events. Beyond Apex, I work closely with a wide range of other local organisations, being committed to a shared goal of building better communities through meaningful partnerships and grassroots action. My passion for Apex has led me to a position on the National Board, where I strive to bring energy, passion and a strong belief in the organisation’s purpose. A strong focus on helping others across Australia experience the value of Apex – supporting communities both large and small through service, connection and leadership.

Jade van Hooydonk

Communications Director

I joined the Apex Club of Bairnsdale in 2021, following in my brother’s footsteps (a member of the Traralgon Apex), however my involvement in Apex began in 1986 when my Dad joined the Glengarry Apex Club. For the next 10 years attending Apex events and functions formed the core memories of my childhood – I don’t think many other people can say that they attended their first convention at age 4! Since joining the Apex Club of Bairnsdale, I have held the role of Club President, as well as 3 terms as Club Secretary. During this time I have been fortunate enough to be involved in the organisation of 3 Colour Run events, giving back to local communities in the wake of the 2020-21 bushfires. Hosting Children’s Week “Look for an Apex book” events and local trivia nights as other service events, a personal highlight was the opening of the club’s time capsule. Originally sealed in 1975, the time capsule was re-opened and re-sealed in 2001, before the most recent opening and re-sealing in 2026 for another 25 years this year. Outside of Apex, when I’m not working as a Secondary School teacher, I can be found planning my next holiday and jet-setting around the world. When I’m at home, I enjoy spending time with my niece and nephew, reading, and playing netball for my local team.

Greg Youngberry

Bursary Manager

My engagement with the Apex Club of Toowoomba began in 2018, marking the commencement of an exciting journey filled with service, leadership, and learning. As I transitioned through various roles within the club, including those of President, Treasurer, and key technology positions, I have embraced and embodied the core ideals of Apex in each capacity. Currently, I serve on the board as the National Bursary Manager, leading an essential program that aligns profoundly with Apex's guiding principles - "To develop by example a more intelligent and aggressive citizenship" and "To promote international understanding and friendship". This program is fundamentally about extending assistance to students in less privileged circumstances globally. Our primary focus at the moment is on the Philippines, a country brimming with potential and resilience. Parallel to my role with Apex, I work with my family in growing certified organic agricultural products and food, including organic chicken, stock feed, beef cattle, and grain crops. This venture allows me to support and contribute to ethical and sustainable farming practices. In addition to the above, I run a business in the Philippines that provides outsourcing services to small-scale Australian companies. We uphold a strong commitment to our staff's welfare, providing fair wages, conducive work conditions, and additional benefits such as comprehensive healthcare. This operational footprint in the Philippines reinforces my understanding of the local environment, thereby enhancing my capacity to effectively oversee the bursary program in the region. Through these various roles, I continue to navigate diverse contexts, build robust relationships, and enact programs that create real and lasting change. I look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead and remain deeply dedicated to leveraging my skills and experiences in furthering Apex's mission.
