From Sizzlefest Wins to Barra Bash Action: A Big Season for Apex Kununurra

The Kununurra Apex Club has been busy, recently achieving back-to-back wins at the Sizzlefest sausage-making competition. Their Beef and Mango sausage with wild rosella proved a crowd favourite, taking out the popular vote and earning the club both the trophy and a giant novelty cheque.

The club is now gearing up for its 27th Annual Apex Barra Bash, which has grown into Western Australia’s largest fishing competition, attracting more than 1,400 competitors. The Barra Bash is Apex Kununurra’s largest fundraising event and plays a vital role in supporting initiatives within the local community, all while delivering a fantastic weekend of fishing, prizes, and camaraderie.

"Check out these awesome highlights from WA's biggest fishing competition - the 2025 Recfishwest Apex Kununurra Barra Bash! Watch the video here!

Last month’s competition smashed the state record for the most entrants for the third year running with 1,650 anglers of all ages and backgrounds getting in on the action.

It’s not surprising with 373 barra landed including 10-plus metreys, five of which were caught by female fishers showing the comp’s continuing inclusivity!

This ripper vid from Spinifex Films showcases just what this hugely popular family-friendly event means to the people of Kununurra and the East Kimberley.

A MASSIVE shout out to the Apex guys for putting the Barra Bash all together once more and raising more than $60,000 for the local community. Thanks also to Tackle World Kununurra  for their support of the event and the many local sponsors who got it behind it.

Sustaining this great competition and the awesome barra fisheries of Lake Kununurra and the Lower Ord river system is why we need the future of the barramundi stocking program to be secured AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

The Bara Bash will return in 2026 from 24-27 September!"
